Today we’re kicking up our tamales a notch! These oven-baked tamales are smoky, spicy, and full of flavor. With just a few simple ingredients and 20 minutes of baking time, you can impress your friends and family with this delicious Mexican classic. Serve with your favorite salsa or toppings for the perfect main dish or snack!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups chicken broth

Instructions

    In a large bowl, combine the masa harina, salt, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder and vegetable oil. Mix until all the ingredients are fully incorporated and a soft dough is formed.

    Add the chicken broth and mix until the dough becomes slightly wet and it’s easy to handle.

    Preheat the oven to 375F.

    Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

    Divide the dough into 12 balls. Roll each one into a thin disc and place them on the baking sheet.

    Bake the tamales for 20 minutes until lightly golden.

To ensure light, airy tamales, make sure not to overwork the dough.

The word ‘tamal’ derived from the Nahuatl ‘tamalli’ which literally means ‘wrapped’. Originally the dough was wrapped in corn or banana leaves!
