Our lemonade is more than just a beverage; itβs a historical sip of cool. The concept of lemonade can be dated back to the Egyptian times, where a lemon juice and sugar concoction was mixed with water to provide a simple refreshment. Across the seas, peppermint was used by the Greeks and Romans not just for flavor but as a sign of hospitality. Combining the two in this tantalizing drink, we pay homage to those ancient refreshments while enjoying modern simplicity.
Ingredients
- 4 lemons, freshly squeezed
- 120g sugar, preferably fine granulated for easy dissolving
- 1L water, still or sparkling for an effervescent twist
- 30g fresh peppermint leaves, plus extra sprigs for garnish
- Ice cubes, to serve
- Lemon slices, for garnish
Instructions
- 1
In a large pitcher, dissolve the sugar in 1L of water, stirring until fully dissolved.
- 2
Juice the lemons and add the fresh lemon juice to the sweetened water.
- 3
Take the fresh peppermint leaves and gently bruise them with your fingers to release their aromatic oils before stirring them into the lemonade.
- 4
Let the lemonade chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, allowing the flavors to meld.
- 5
Serve over ice, garnished with additional peppermint sprigs and lemon slices for a touch of elegance.
Chef's Tip
To make this lemonade even more special, try adding a splash of rosewater or a few slices of cucumber for an extra layer of refreshment.
Fun Fact
Lemonade was so popular in 17th century Paris that vendors called 'limonadiers' sold it in the streets from tanks on their backs!
